Est. 2011 — Hudson, NY
The garden, found.
Stonehaven is a landscape architecture and design-build studio working across New York, Connecticut, and New Jersey. We design gardens that look like they have always been there.
Selected Work
Recent projects
Hollow Ridge Estate
Bedford, NYA 14-acre Bedford property reimagined around a single moving idea — that the garden should feel found, not designed. The architecture is restrained; the planting is dense and naturalistic; the stonework is dry-laid from local fieldstone collected within ten miles.
Cypress House
Greenwich, CTAn Italianate garden for a Greenwich property — formal terraces, hand-cut limestone, and twelve mature olive trees that wintered over their first season under fleece. A study in restraint and patience.
Marsh & Pine
East Hampton, NYA coastal property in East Hampton where the work was as much about restoration as design — re-establishing dune grasses, reintroducing native meadow, and laying a cedar boardwalk that vanishes into the landscape.
Approach
We work the way
a small studio
should.
One landscape architect leads every project from first conversation through the final planting. Daniel's masons build every wall, terrace, and water feature in-house. Nothing important is subcontracted.
We take on six new projects a year. Smaller than that and we couldn't sustain the work; larger and the work would suffer. The garden you commission gets the same hours of attention from the same people, whether it's a half-acre courtyard or a forty-acre estate.
That deliberate pace shows in the work. Joints sit tight. Plant palettes hold up through five seasons. And five years on, the gardens read as inevitable — as if they were always meant to be there.
Capabilities
Services
Landscape Architecture
Master planning, site analysis, and full design documentation. We work from first survey through construction administration — drawings every contractor on site can build from without guessing.
Hardscape & Masonry
Bluestone terraces, dry-laid fieldstone walls, custom pools, fire pits, outdoor kitchens — built by our own crews under a master mason. We don't sub out the stonework.
Estate Management
Ongoing stewardship for the gardens we design. Fine pruning, irrigation, lighting service, and seasonal transitions handled by horticulturists who know your property by name.
Planting & Horticulture
Native and naturalized plantings sourced from a small network of growers we've worked with for years. Mature specimen installation, meadow restoration, and four-season palettes.
A client wrote
“Margaret and her team did what we'd asked three other firms to do and watched them all walk away from. Five years on, the garden looks like it's always been there. That's the highest compliment I can pay it.”

Our calendar fills approximately a year ahead. The earlier we begin the conversation, the more time the design has to settle.
